“Life is too short,” she panicked, “I want more.” He nodded slowly, “Wake up earlier.” ~Dr. SunWolf
To be upfront, I'm not a morning person.
And I don't think that will ever change.
Let's be honest, no matter how much we love life or our jobs, leaving bed is one of the toughest decisions we make every day.
But it's a choice that makes or breaks the day.
After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2011, I landed a job at a marketing agency as an interactive designer. All of a sudden, the time I had for myself seemed minimal. There was the time before work and the few hours at night spent racing home to cook dinner and chill before going to bed only to replay it all again the next day.
"Sheesh," I thought. "When will I ever accomplish my dreams?"
And that's when I began changing my life by waking up earlier.
But before you stop reading, don't worry - this isn't another article to convince you that waking up early is everything. It's not. I believe that waking up early is necessary for my life, but yours may be very different.
Instead, this article is focused on what you do when you wake up.
Because our (conscious or unconscious) morning routine plays an enormous role in how the day will go. And the best part is, you have the power to make it awesome.
By cultivating an incredible morning routine.
It's about deciding what you need to do to be the best version of you for the day ahead - every day. And ensuring you get it.
I joke openly that my morning routine gets me "fit for public consumption" but it couldn't be any truer. I need my morning time to be the highest version of who I am for myself, those who work with me and Anahata. And it doesn't always work, but my day is always better when I stick to it.
My morning routine consists of meditating, reading (a spiritual devotion, book, etc), journaling, praying and exercise. It usually takes about 1.5 hours, but it's my time for me.
And I'm worth it. My future is worth it. And you are no different.
Think about it - how do you start the day? Picking up your phone to read Facebook? Rushing around before you rush out the door? Feeling defeated before you even get up?
Wouldn't you like to have more control?
Make it. Take it. And start slow.
In the beginning, I was waking up early for a 30-minute run. Then I decided to add reading a devotional before my run. Then journaling... Prayer. And finally, meditating.
To be honest, I've tried many times to shorten my morning routine but anything I try to cut makes a difference. However, if it's a crazy day, I stick to what's most necessary to me: meditating and prayer.
Starting the day with a morning routine puts the day in your hands - it gives you control. And it ensures that you are on the path towards whatever it is you want.
Dream of being in shape? Of starting a business? Or creating a new life?
Whatever it is, it starts with the decisions you make everyday, and those decisions start the moment we wake up, the moment we start thinking or put our feet on the ground.
Start your day intentionally - with a morning routine dedicated to bettering you - everyday.
And see what happens. Watch yourself bloom.
